The Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Mark Hanson, released a statement saying that he "appreciated" President Obama's Israel - Palestinian speech on May 19 and that it "resonates with ELCA Mideast principles." (see here)

Bishop Hanson went on to say "(b)uilding on the president’s statement, we also continue to support a negotiated, final status agreement which achieves a 'shared Jerusalem' serving as a capital to both Palestine and Israel, with access to and full rights in the city for Jews, Christians and Muslims. . . The occupation must end, and Israel must withdraw its civilian population and military presence from all territory it has occupied since 1967."

Israeli Prime Minister Bejamin Netanyahu responded to President Obama's statement/speech/plan here.

A more informative title for your post might be: "ELCA Sides With Terrorists." The return to the pre-1967 borders, which makes Israel only 9 miles wide and completely indefensible, is the long-time goal of terrorist organizations that seek the annihilation of Israel and the Jewish people. And what of the costs in human lives that would result from giving Hamas control over Jewish settlements that have been in place for four decades? What business does Hanson have offering opinions on territorial claims, anyway?

It's absurd for the ELCA to attack Israel for building a wall to protect itself from suicide bombers instead of blaming the organizations sending them. I have yet to hear the leadership of the ELCA denounce the oppression of Christians in the muslim world or the anti-semitism taught in schools all over the arab world. After years of attending a church affiliated with the ELCA , I had to resign my membership. I can't be a useful idiot for Fatah and Hamas!
