National Coverage Over ELCA Professor's Claim Jesus was a Muslim

Luther College (ELCA) is getting some national attention.  Attention that no doubt it wishes would go away fast.  Of course that is what happens when a Christian college allows foolishness to be taught, insanity to prevail and heresy to be go unchecked in a school which garners students and financial gifts based on its Christian-faith affiliation.  World Net Daily is the high traffic internet news website which published a story about Luther College's Robert F. Shedinger, an Associate Professor of Religion and Department Head at Luther, who wrote the book, Was Jesus a Muslim?

"Christian prof says Jesus was Muslim" - World Net Daily - read here.  This article, published only 4 hours ago has already amassed 462 comments.

Internet news website The Blaze wrote an article titled "‘Jesus Was a Muslim’: Religion Professor Makes Unbelievable Argument" - read here.

Also published today, about Luther Professor Shedinger, is an article on the website Campus Reform - read here.

Finally, an article I wrote two months ago
on Professor Shedinger and his book on the website Exposing the ELCA - read here.

"The very foundation of Western thought is based on the desire to evaluate, reason, and critique all claims to truth. The claims by apologists for Islam that it is a religion of peace are easily refuted by even the most cursory examination of its doctrines and history. Thus, propagandists for Islam have no choice but to make every effort to shut down debate and silence criticism. In doing so they are preparing Western society for the ultimate conquest of Islam through jihad by cultural or violent means." --Brigitte Gabriel, THEY MUST BE STOPPED (New York: St. Martin's Press, 2008). pp. 212-213. In the interview posted at Trending Sideways, Robert Shedinger said, "I firmly believe that the Muslim understanding of Jesus as a prophet of the Islamic message of justice and equality is more consistent with what we can know about Jesus as an historical figure than the Christian understanding of Jesus as a spiritual savior of individuals." In other words, Jesus was not really the Son of God, but he was a great moral teacher.

C.S. Lewis discussed this viewpoint in his book MERE CHRISTIANITY:

"One part of [Jesus'] claim tends to slip past us unnoticed because we have heard it so often that we no longer see what it amounts to. I mean the claim to forgive sins: any sins. Now unless the speaker is God, this is really so preposterous as to be comic. We can all understand how a man forgives offences against himself. You tread on my toes and I forgive you, you steal my money and I forgive you. But what should we make of a man, himself unrobbed and untrodden on, who announced that he forgave you for treading on other men's toes and stealing other men's money? Asinine fatuity is the kindest description we should give of his conduct. Yet this is what Jesus did. He told people that their sins were forvigen, and never waited to consult all the other people whom their sins had undoubtedly injured. He unhesitatingly behaved as if He was the party chiefly concerned, the person chiefly offended in all offences.... In the mouth of any speaker who is not God, these words would imply what I can only regard as a silliness and conceit unrivalled by any other character in history."

"Yet (and this is the strange, significant thing) even His enemies, when they read the Gospels, do not usually get the impression of silliness and conceit. Still less do unprejudiced readers...."

"I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: 'I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God.' That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic--on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg--or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse.... [L]et us not come with any patronising nonsence about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to." (MERE CHRISTIANITY, Book 2, Chapter 3.)

"Then he (Joshua) took a large stone and set it up there under the oak near the holy place of the LORD.

'See!' he said to all the people. 'This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the LORD has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God.'
    Joshua 24:26-27
